Yes that’s a kleenex.
I didn’t realize it was still there when I took the photo. But tbh without it the photo wouldn’t be telling the truth.
Songwriting for me isn’t really about trying to write something that will play on the radio. Maybe one day that will be my goal. But for now, writing music is a way to process things I’m feeling. Hard things. Things that are too hard to talk about. Things I’m healing from.
So I cry when I write.
But it’s hard to make room for that in my day-to-day life. It’s not the kind of thing I would do for a couple hours before I go to work. And lately I’ve noticed there hasn’t been enough room in my life for this kind of emotional release.
So this semester, I’ve taken on a few less students and set aside specific days where I can write. And cry. And allow myself time and space to feel the things I can’t talk about without crying.
With cringe culture at its highest these days, I realize even admitting this is a bold move. But what’s the point of being an artist if you can’t sit comfortably with your feelings.
The first two days I tried to do this, I chickened out. I didn’t want to feel any of the things that were coming up and I certainly didn’t want to try to turn them into poetry.
But today, I didn’t give myself an out. I sat with my lyrics and I allowed myself to feel. It was harder than I thought it would be. But also really good.
I have no idea if I’ll ever be able to sing any of these songs live (without the crying). But writing them feels sacred. And for now, that’s enough. ❤️
the sun was out today 💛
Every artist is unique. But as a music coach, I like to take most clients through a similar 3-step development process. ✨
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes everyone! Feeling really lucky to be surrounded by so many great people in my life. ❤️
